Kaizer Chiefs had to come from behind to secure a 1-1 Absa Premiership draw with Free State Stars as they settled for a fourth successive stalemate, only adding to the permanent pressure on coach Steve Komphela.

It was a day of draws in South Africa's top league as all five matches ended in stalemates, though at least this time there were some goals to savour.

Gustavo Paez and George Maluleka missed early opportunities for Chiefs in their fixture, while Siphiwe Tshabalala had a chipped attempt at goal that went over the bar and Bernard Parker missed with a headed chance.

Sinethemba Jantjie forced a fine stop from Chiefs goalkeeper Itumeleng Khune early in the second half, before the visitors hit the front.

Nhlanhla Vilakazi rifled a ball goalwards and Chiefs defender Daniel Cardoso could only deflect the ball into his own net with his head.

Chiefs responded within three minutes as Parker found space in the box and drilled the ball into the net.

Joseph Molangoane should have handed Chiefs the win with five minutes remaining when he had a clear sight of goal, but chose to pass instead of shoot and Stars were able to scramble the ball clear.

Mamelodi Sundowns were held to a 0-0 draw by Chippa United in Port Elizabeth, and rode their luck at times.

Chippa's Abel Mabaso, a former Sundowns player, struck the post inside 10 minutes and Paseka Mako missed a golden chance to score when he rounded the keeper, but could not finish.

Sundowns were reduced to half-chances, with Percy Tau and Khama Billiat both going close, only to be denied by Nigeria's World Cup-bound goalkeeper Daniel Akpeyi, who was forced off through injury just past the hour-mark.

Maritzburg United also played to a 0-0 draw with bottom side Bidvest Wits, the 10th game in a row in which one of their own players has failed to find the back of the net.

They came close midway through the first half when defender Bevan Fransman saw his header come back off the crossbar, and then also had some luck when Wits striker Eleazar Rodgers also hit the woodwork with a header.

It was a point that probably left both coaches ruing two points lost, but it did at least move defending champions Wits off the bottom of the table.

In the two evening kick-offs, Ajax Cape Town let a 2-0 lead slip in injury-time as they were held 2-2 by AmaZulu while Cape Town City also came from 2-0 down to secure a draw at Golden Arrows.

Masilake Phohlongo had given Ajax the lead with his first career goal, before Tashreeq Morris added a second.

Ajax were seemingly cruising to the win until Mhlengi Cele pulled one back in injury-time and veteran striker Mabhuti Khenyeza then levelled with virtually the last play as he headed home a cross.

In the other fixture, Siphelele Magubane and Jabulani Shongwe had Arrows in a comfortable lead going into the final 10 minutes against City, but the visitors found a way back into the game via a penalty that was converted by Ayanda Patosi.

And they grabbed a good away point when Thabo Nodada equalised in the last minute for what will be a satisfactory result for coach Benni McCarthy.
