Steve Komphela's dismal record in cup competitions will again be in the spotlight when he leads Kaizer Chiefs in their MTN8 quarterfinal against SuperSport United in Durban on Saturday.
Komphela is yet to win silverware of any kind in a coaching career spanning 10 seasons, though to be fair all but two of those were spent with less fashionable sides such as Free State Stars, Platinum Stars and Maritzburg United.
It has been at Chiefs where his failures have been laid bare over the past couple of seasons, a 'wrong' he needs to 'right' quickly.
He has managed just six wins in 15 knockout matches with AmaKhosi, a desperately poor run for a team used to a steady diet of cup success down the years.
Komphela told his club's website that the team "want" to start the season on a winning note on Saturday, when really the word he should have used was "must".
"We want to start on a winning note. We've done our homework and are happy with the preparations so far," Komphela said.
"We want to uphold the tradition and the winning culture of the club. It is important that the integration of the new players must be swift. We have to perform from the first whistle of the season."
SuperSport played their last competitive fixture exactly a month ago in the African Confederation Cup and according to coach Eric Tinkler have lost none of that sharpness.
Chiefs have muddled their way through pre-season but Komphela will hope they can hit the ground running.
"SuperSport are a good side and, besides a few new players, they also have a new coach in Eric Tinkler. We will be looking at progressing to the next stage of the competition and go on to win the trophy," he said.
