Arsenal's Aaron Ramsey could still stay at the club - Arsene Wenger

Former Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has said he believes midfielder Aaron Ramsey could yet stay at the club.

Ramsey is into the final year of his contract at the Emirates Stadium, with talks over a new deal having broken down.

That means that, as things stand, the Wales international would be able to leave on a free transfer in the summer.

But Wenger, who attempted to persuade Ramsey to sign a new deal before he left Arsenal at the end of last season, said he did not feel the 27-year-old would definitely leave.

"We tried that [agreeing a new deal] before and it still can happen," Wenger told reporters.

"I don't really know what is happening at Arsenal. Sure, Aaron Ramsey is in a strong position now and he will use this position.

"But I don't know how far Arsenal will go in terms of giving him a huge contract. These things were once my responsibility, but not any more. I am happy about that."

Last week, Ramsey said he would not seek a January exit and thought he had reached agreement on a new deal before contract talks broke down.

"Of course [I will see out the season]," Ramsey said after Wales' 4-1 loss to Spain on Thursday. "I am contracted to Arsenal and I am going to do my best now this season to try and achieve something special."
