Giroud: Fekir would be welcome at Chelsea (0:28)

Olivier Giroud believes Chelsea would be getting 'a really good player' if they manage to complete a last-minute move for Lyon's Nabil Fekir. (0:28)

Chelsea striker Olivier Giroud has said he and Eden Hazard spoke to Lyon midfielder Nabil Fekir about a possible move to Stamford Bridge during the World Cup, adding that he would "happily welcome" him to the club.

Fekir was not involved as Chelsea beat Ligue 1 side Lyon 5-4 on penalties after a goalless draw in their final preseason friendly at Stamford Bridge on Tuesday, having returned to training this week following his role in France's World Cup win.

The 25-year-old had appeared set to move to Liverpool earlier this summer, only for Lyon president Jean-Michel Aulas to pull the plug on a deal.

"Of course I talked to him about it [moving to Chelsea] when we were with France and his transfer to Liverpool that fell through," Giroud told FootMercato.

"After that, there was talk he was coming to Chelsea, and I think even Eden put in a couple of words. We would happily welcome him. He's a super player, but I don't know if it's on the agenda right now because the [Premier League] transfer window closes on Thursday."

Fekir made 30 appearances in Ligue 1 last season, scoring a career-best 18 goals, and after the Chelsea match Lyon coach Bruno Genesio would not commit to saying his star man would stay.

"It's too soon to be sure," he said. "He wanted to leave at the end of last season but he started training yesterday. Who knows? There may be opportunities that come up before the end of the window, but for now he's a player for Lyon."
