SAN JOSE, Calif. -- Ernesto Valverde appealed for Jasper Cillessen to stay at the club after the Dutch goalkeeper admitted he does not know what his future holds.
Cillessen said earlier this summer that he wants to play more than 10 games a season and he looks set to remain the second choice to Marc-Andre ter Stegen at Camp Nou this year.
Each goalkeeper played a half each as Barca were beaten 1-0 by AC Milan on Saturday and Cillessen told reporters after the game "I don't know" when asked if he will move on this summer.
However, Valverde made it clear he wants him to stay, although he didn't go as far as making any promises.
"My idea is to have two good goalkeepers, the two we have now, Marc and Jasper," the Barca coach said in his postmatch news conference. "It's true that [Cillessen's] not played as much as Marc, but that's how being a goalkeeper can be.
"He knows what I think. I don't think he will be hard work if he stays, we are very happy with his professionalism and his attitude. We hope he stays with us and is happy [here]."
Cillessen played full games against Tottenham and Roma during Barca's tour of the United States but was withdrawn at the break against Milan at Levi's Stadium, with Ter Stegen replacing him.
Barca were the better side for large portions of the encounter but were beaten by Andre Silva's stoppage-time strike in San Jose.
"We're leaving the U.S with good sensations in terms of performances, if not results," added Valverde, whose side lost to Roma and beat Spurs on penalties after a draw.
"There are lots of positives. Tottenham scored in last minute to draw, the late Roma goals came when the younger players were on, and [against Milan we] dominated, but they get the goal.
"Other positives have been the new signings, Arthur, [Clement] Lenglet and Malcom, as well as the B team players: Riqui Puig, [Juan] Miranda, Monchu, [Alex] Collado. They can help us not just in the future, but in the present.
"It's also been good to see Rafinha properly, something I'd not been able to do before, and Munir, too."
Barca now return to Spain to prepare for next weekend's Spanish Super Cup against Sevilla in Morocco.
It will be the first chance for Lionel Messi and the club's World Cup participants to play this season and Valverde admitted that the preparation for the final is not ideal.
"Yes, it's a handicap," he said when asked if not having worked with half of his squad yet in preseason was a disadvantage heading into the Sevilla game.
"But we had already anticipated that due to the World Cup. We will have to rely on some players that haven't played in preseason yet against a team [Sevilla] that's already playing official games [in the Europa League]."
