Keisuke Honda is targeting a move to Melbourne Victory and a place in the Japan team at the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo.
Honda, 32, announced his retirement from the national team last month after playing at his third World Cup and helping Japan reach the second round.
However, the forward said he would love the chance to star in his homeland as one of three overage players in the under-23 tournament.
"I have the aim of playing in the Tokyo Olympics in two years," he told AbemaTV. "One of the reasons I want to accomplish this is because it will be hosted in Tokyo. I wanted a goal that would let me compete against the world.
"I would like to share my experience with the next generation of players. I would like to help the team to victory."
Meanwhile, Melbourne looks likely to be the next destination for Honda, who has played in Japan, the Netherlands, Russia, Italy and Mexico.
After leaving Mexican side Pachuca in June, he is a free agent and looking for a new challenge.
"I can only say so much -- we're in negotiations," he said. "I want to do things beyond being a player. I've been negotiating with a club that understands what I want to do.
"We've had very positive conversations. Nothing's been decided yet, but if everything goes smoothly we should be able to announce in a few days."
If Honda signs for Melbourne, reports in Australia say the salary on offer would be around AU$2.5 million.
