Arsenal's Alex Iwobi close to signing new contract - Unai Emery

Arsenal head coach Unai Emery said midfielder Alex Iwobi is close to signing a contract extension.

Iwobi, 22, came through the club's Hale End academy before establishing himself as a first-team regular under Arsene Wenger.

"I have the information -- he is near," Emery said at a news conference in Singapore ahead of Saturday's preseason game against Paris Saint-Germain. "My information is that he is going to sign and continue with us."

Iwobi, Mesut Ozil and Mohamed Elneny joined up with their teammates for the flight to Singapore after their post-World Cup breaks but did not play in the friendly against Atletico Madrid on Thursday.

However, they could feature against PSG following a week of training.

"This week, Mesut, Elneny and Iwobi are starting to work with us and our first impression is very good with them," Emery said.

Iwobi has already made 98 appearances for Arsenal, including 26 in the Premier League last season.

Handing a new deal to the midfielder would be another step for Arsenal toward tying down their top young talent, with the likes of Hector Bellerin, Calum Chambers and Rob Holding having signed long-term extensions recently.
