Liverpool open talks with Stoke City over Xherdan Shaqiri - source

Liverpool have opened talks with Stoke City over a potential transfer for Xherdan Shaqiri, a source has confirmed to ESPN FC.

Liverpool began monitoring Shaqiri earlier in the summer and they are now holding discussions with Stoke about a move for the 26-year-old.

The Switzerland international is keen to leave Stoke after their relegation from the Premier League and is reported to have a release clause in his contract, although the exact details of that remain unknown.

The forward has been a player on Liverpool's radar since 2014 as the club, then managed by Brendan Rodgers, tried to prise him away from Bayern Munich, who blocked the deal, according to the player.

Shaqiri is currently on holiday after participating in the World Cup and recently said his future would soon be resolved as he expressed his desire to continue playing in the Premier League.

"You are going to hear soon on my future," he said. "I was not thinking about this because I was just focused on my national team and wanted to make a good tournament for my team and my nation. It's pretty normal to be aware of clubs being interested.

"Of course, I would like to play on the biggest stage in football. Everybody knows that."

Meanwhile, Stoke are one of 12 English sides that have expressed an interest in taking Liverpool's Harry Wilson on loan, a source has told ESPN FC.

Wilson signed a new five-year contract on Tuesday and is being given the chance to impress Jurgen Klopp during the preseason.
