Toronto FC signs former Athletic Bilbao midfielder Ager Aketxe

Ager Aketxe has signed with Toronto FC following his departure from Athletic Bilbao, the MLS champions announced on Friday.

Aketxe, 24, had his contract with the Spanish club terminated by mutual consent last week to facilitate his move to Toronto, who will use targeted allocation money to sign the midfielder.

"Ager is a talented midfielder, that developed at an historic club, in one of the top leagues in the world," Toronto general manager Tim Bezbatchenko said in a statement. "Ager has both the ability to create as well as finish. He possesses a tremendous work rate along with a great attitude."

Aketxe made 12 appearances in all competitions for Athletic this season, but none since December. He was most commonly used as a substitute in the Europa League, and he also started two matches in the Copa del Rey.

Aketxe spent last season on loan with Cadiz in the second division, where he scored five goals in 18 games.

In announcing his exit last week, Athletic said they will have the option to buy back the former Spain youth international in the future.
