MANCHESTER -- Pep Guardiola says Manchester City have made no more progress in their move for Jonny Evans but hasn't ruled out trying to buy a centre-back before the transfer window closes.
City have had a reported £18 million bid for the West Brom defender rejected and Baggies boss Tony Pulis revealed that it would take a "very, very good offer" to persuade the club to sell him.
The former Manchester United defender is a doubt for West Brom's game with Burnley at the weekend but Pulis told a news conference that Evans is happy at the club.
"We've turned down an offer for Jonny," Pulis said. "We don't want to sell Jonny and we don't need to sell him. It would have to be a very, very good offer.
"Jonny understands the situation and where everything is. He is happy here and wants to get on with his football. Jonny is one of our best players. We all understand where we are."
Guardiola said he had nothing to add to Pulis' comments but didn't rule out adding new faces to his squad before the window closes at the end of August.
"He's a player for West Brom. It's still the same. Tony Pulis was clear so there's nothing to talk about," the Spaniard told a news conference ahead of Monday's Premier League clash with Everton.
"We try to [get] the best squad as possible for the long season. We are going to see how the market finishes at the end of the season.
"If we have to stay with the players we have right now we are happy, if someone comes we are happy too.
"I know how good the club works since I arrive here and we try to do our best, sometimes it's possible, sometimes not. Nothing to say."
Pulis hasn't ruled out selling Evans and City are expected to go back with an improved offer for the Northern Ireland international.
"When it's Man City or one of the top four or five clubs, it's very, very difficult then because it affects the player because they have the chance to better themselves," he admitted.
"We don't want to stop him from doing something he wants to do. We don't want to have a player that stays at the football club and is disappointed.
"He's been in this position before here and he understands the situation, until all parties agree then he won't go anywhere. He has been made club captain and he wants to get on with his football."
Evans, 29, joined West Brom in an £8m deal in 2015 after nine years at Old Trafford and has two years remaining on his contract at The Hawthorns.
