Real Betis hope to keep Dani Ceballos amid Barcelona, Real Madrid interest

Real Betis are hoping to fend off attempts by both Real Madrid and Barcelona to sign midfielder Dani Ceballos.

The Andalusian club have confirmed the two La Liga giants have made an approach to prise the 20-year-old away.

Voted the Most Valuable Player at last month's European Under-21 Championship, Ceballos has attracted the attention of top clubs with his performances and his €15 million release clause.

Asked about Ceballos' future, Betis president Angel Haro said in a news conference: "For the time being, we are working with the idea that the player will remain at Betis.

"We have received calls from Barcelona and Real Madrid expressing their interest in the player."

Betis are trying to convince Ceballos to remain at the club where he made 24 league starts in the 2016-17 campaign and is under contract until June 2020.

"Our wish is still for the player to remain with us, that is our main aim," Haro said. "But it doesn't depend on us, the player has to decide and we will respect his decision."

AS recently reported that Real Madrid are prepared to pay Betis a figure higher than Ceballos' release clause while Barca are reportedly prepared to start a bidding war with Madrid.

"If he [Ceballos] informs us that he wants to leave Betis, something which he has not done, then we will work on what we want in terms of a figure," Haro said. "But we are not thinking about that right now."

Ceballos met with Betis executives earlier this week and told the press he would need two weeks to make a decision on his future.

However, Haro said: "I don't think he will need so much time to make a decision. He told me he needed a couple of days of holidays to decide.

"From what I understand, he will take a few days and give us an answer soon."

Ceballos made his senior team debut with Betis in April 2014 after going through the club's youth ranks and he became a regular starter after Pepe Mel took the helm seven months later.

Mel, now in charge of Deportivo, believes Ceballos, despite his youth, has everything to succeed at a top club.

"I had the pleasure of working with him for two years," Mel told Cadena Ser radio. "Dani loves football. He is a hard worker and everything he has, he has earned.

"He is special, he is different. When he is on the field, he transmits [that passion] to the fans that are watching the game at the stadium and that is why he is in the position that he is [with offers on the table].

"I feel he is more than ready to take the leap to play at a big club. He is one of those players that will succeed because he is cheeky, in the sense that he doesn't fear anything, he just likes to compete and win. Whatever happens, I'll be happy for him."
