Romelu Lukaku can replace Diego Costa at Chelsea - Frank Lampard

Chelsea legend Frank Lampard says Romelu Lukaku would be the ideal man to replace Diego Costa if the Spain international leaves Stamford Bridge this summer.

Costa, 28, said earlier this month that Chelsea boss Antonio Conte had told him he is not in his plans for next season and Lukaku, 24, has been strongly tipped for a return to his former club.

Lampard said Lukaku, who scored 25 Premier League goals last season, has progressed significantly at Everton.

"What he's done in the last two or three years is that he's really developed," he told L'Equipe. "Chelsea bought him as a youngster and, whether it was too early or whether he didn't get a chance I don't know, but I love his attitude, I love the way he plays.

"He's very determined. I remember in training, he'd practise his shooting and would be trying to score goals pretty much every day.

"I respect lads like that. I think he deserves the best, and talking about Chelsea, if Costa does move on and they want to get someone like-for-like, a big front man who can score goals, Lukaku has proven he can do that."

Lukaku joined Chelsea from Anderlecht in 2011 but spent the 2012-13 season on loan at West Brom before joining Everton, initially on loan, the following year.
