Sunderland striker Jermain Defoe is poised to join Bournemouth, sources close to both clubs have told ESPN FC.
Defoe has activated a clause in his contract allowing him to leave Sunderland on a free transfer in the wake of the club's relegation from the Premier League.
A number of clubs have expressed an interest in signing Defoe this summer, but Bournemouth have moved swiftly to try and tie up a deal for the England international.
Bournemouth boss Eddie Howe is a big admirer of Defoe and sees his goals as a valuable addition to his side for next season as he looks to build on their ninth-place finish in the 2016-17 Premier League campaign.
Defoe scored 15 goals for Sunderland this season, but it was not enough to keep them up and they have been resigned to his departure since their relegation was confirmed.
The 34-year-old's form saw him win a recall to the England squad in March, scoring in a win over Lithuania.
Bournemouth have offered Defoe a three-year deal to return to Dean Court after the striker enjoyed a loan spell at the club in 2000 when he was starting out at West Ham United, scoring 19 goals in 31 appearances for the Cherries.
Talks are at an advanced stage between both parties, with Bournemouth confident of sealing the transfer by the end of the week.
