Fernando Torres says he hopes to stay at Atletico Madrid after marking their final game at the Vicente Calderon with a brace in Sunday's 3-1 La Liga win over Athletic Bilbao.
It was fitting for lifelong Atletico fan Torres to be on the scoresheet on what was an emotional day for all involved, but the 33-year-old does not know if his second spell at the club is now over as he is out of contract this summer.
Speaking after the final whistle, the former Liverpool and Chelsea player is quoted by AS as saying he has "many more years" to give to Atletico.
"I still feel the same pride to belong to this club," Torres said. "I want to enjoy many more years with this team and this jersey. And above all, to thank these fans for all the support they have given me in the good moments and the bad moments. Next year we will try and do it all again."
Torres had scored just once in his previous 16 outings, but netted two goals inside 11 minutes on Sunday and almost had a hat trick, only for an offside Antoine Griezmann to touch a goal-bound shot in the second half.
The former Spain international said the main thing was for Atletico fans to enjoy themselves ahead of the summer move to their new Wanda Metropolitano home.
"[The hat trick] almost happened, but that is not important now," Torres said. "This is a day to celebrate a lot. We are leaving the Calderon. It is a day to enjoy. It has been very emotional. The moments we have lived through have been very special, since some of us were only small.
"The victory today honoured Atletico's spirit. We are leaving, but this is our home. Now begins the future. Life moves on, but the feelings always remain. It is a tremendous honour to have formed part of this."
It was also an emotional day for midfielder Tiago, 36, who is leaving Atletico after two years in which he has played little due to injuries.
"It is the moment to take a decision," Tiago is quoted as saying by AS. "I could retire or play in a less competitive league. I am thinking about it at the moment, and will decide soon. It is not an option to sign a new contract with Atletico. I could not accept a new deal in this condition."
The former Benfica, Chelsea, Lyon and Juventus player said he had taken advice from Atletico boss Diego Simeone and was considering becoming a manager in the future.
"At the start of my career I said I would only play to 32, and would never be a coach," he said. "But once I reached 30 I began to think about being able to coach. Maybe this role will awake something new in me. Simeone has recommended me to do it, maybe because he sees I have the leadership [qualities] for that role."
