Tottenham sign young midfielder Shilow Tracey from Ebbsfleet United

Tottenham have completed the signing of teenage midfielder Shilow Tracey from Ebbsfleet United, the non-league club have confirmed.

Tracey, 17, was invited for a trial with Spurs in October and travelled to Florida with the club's academy to play at the IMG Cup last month, scoring in both matches.

The youngster played in Spurs under-18s' 4-2 defeat to Chelsea on Saturday and on Tuesday he travelled with the group to the Copa Chivas in Mexico, where Spurs will face Benfica, Boca Juniors and River Plate.

Although the North London club are yet to officially confirm the signing, Tottenham's academy director John McDermott revealed Tracey had joined in comments featured on the club's official website.

"Shilow has signed through a connection with Ebbsfleet's manager Daryl McMahon, who has previously worked for us as a youth coach and we thank him and Ebbsfleet for their endeavours," McDermott said.

"He'll now come in and become one of 25 U18 players -- and one of 40 players in the whole 17 to 21 age group -- who has got to fight every day to try to improve."

Tracey was also linked to the likes of Crystal Palace and West Ham, but Ebbsfleet vice-chairman Peter Varney paid tribute to Spurs for the "professional" manner in which they handled the transfer.

"This is a fantastic opportunity for Shilow and we are proud of the fact that our youth academy is producing quality young players just one year after we set it up," Varney said.

"I would like to thank Spurs for the professional manner in which they have handled the transfer negotiations. I must also recognise the work done with Shilow by Daryl McMahon and his staff in our youth academy."

Sources have told ESPN FC that Tracey has not been signed with the U21s or first team in mind, with Spurs keen to play down expectations around the youngster.
