Galaxy beat Tijuana on penalties in Leagues Cup

Giancarlo Gonzalez scored the winner as LA Galaxy overcame Club Tijuana 3-1 on penalties Tuesday to advance to face Cruz Azul in the semifinal of the Leagues Cup.

The game had ended 2-2 after 90 minutes in Dignity Health Sports Park, with Galaxy keeper Matt Lampson making three saves during the penalty shootout to help the MLS team to victory.

Galaxy coach Guillermo Barros Schelotto rested key players Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Jonathan dos Santos and made nine changes in total from the starting team that defeated rival LAFC 3-2 last Friday.

Galaxy's Emmanuel Boateng deflected in a shot from Kai Koreniuk to give LA Galaxy the lead against the run of play in the 27th, but Ariel Nahuelpan equalized from a Camilo Sanvezzo cross five minutes later.

Uruguayan Washington Camacho latched onto a cross from the right to put Xolos ahead just before half-time, but Galaxy came back via a Dave Romney header from a corner in the 54th.

Xolos' Miller Bolanos came closest to winning the game in normal time when he hit the post in the 70th, but the Mexican team couldn't get the winner, despite pressuring towards the end of the game.

Only Nahuelpan scored from the spot for Xolos, with Erick Torres, Diego Braghieri and Angel Sepulveda all seeing their penalties saved by Lampson.
