Tottenham tormented in Brighton defeat as Lloris suffers nasty injury

Tottenham's nightmare week got even worse as they lost 3-0 at Brighton following their 7-2 embarrassment against Bayern Munich in the Champions League.

Amid questions over his future, Mauricio Pochettino watched as his side capitulated for the second time in the space of five days, making it 18 defeats from 40 matches in 2019. A serious-looking injury to goalkeeper and captain Hugo Lloris capped a difficult afternoon for last season's Champions League finalists, who are without an away Premier League victory in nine months.

On Lloris' injury, Pochettino said: "He is in the hospital now. The club is going to communicate the problem but we need to wait. The club will communicate because I think it is a big problem in his arm.

"It was a massive impact after three minutes. It had a massive impact on the game. To concede and lose your captain is a massive impact emotionally and for the team.

"After 30 minutes it was 2-0 and we tried to find a solution but it was impossible. It's a very difficult moment but we need to keep going."

Tottenham were outplayed at the AMEX and have now won just once in six matches in all competitions but it was a fine day for Brighton, winning just their second match in their last 17 league games.

Neal Maupay put Graham Potter's men ahead following a ghastly error by Lloris, who suffered a nasty injury as a result, before Aaron Connolly doubled the lead. Youngster Connolly enjoyed a dream day and added another in the second half to deepen the misery on Pochettino's men.

"I can't put it into words at the minute -- it's a dream come true. To be playing and scoring in the match, I can't describe it. I didn't really know how to celebrate -- I am speechless," Connolly said afterwards.

Spurs needed a bright start following their humiliation at the hands of Bayern in midweek but they fell behind after three minutes following another Lloris error.

Pascal Gross' cross from the left appeared harmless enough but Lloris spilled it, allowing Maupay to nod in from close range. Lloris fell awkwardly and required oxygen from Tottenham's medical team as he was taken off on a stretcher and replaced by Paulo Gazzaniga following a lengthy delay.

Tottenham were well off the pace and deservedly fell further behind on 32 minutes when Gazzaniga failed to hold on to Connolly's shot before watching as the 19-year-old tapped in the rebound on his first Premier League start.

The away side struggled to gain any momentum and it took until late in the first half for Erik Lamela to have their first meaningful opportunity of the match.

Tottenham improved slightly after the break but still appeared susceptible to counter-attacks and Gross almost made it three after the hour mark as his free kick clipped the bar.

Brighton did not need to wait long, though, for the next as Connolly, excellent all match, cut in from the left and whipped a superb effort into the bottom corner.

"We want seven," the home supporters sung as they revelled in a fine afternoon, while Pochettino was also met with chants from the home fans of "sacked in the morning," as Tottenham's terrible week ended on a sour note.
