Honors even as Loons, RSL trade second-half goals

Marcelo Silva scored in the 70th minute as Real Salt Lake rallied for a 1-1 draw with Minnesota United on Saturday night in Sandy, Utah.

Darwin Quintero scored a goal and Vito Mannone had two saves for Minnesota United (10-7-4, 34 points), which had a four-game MSL winning streak snapped. The Loons, who had won seven in a row in all competitions, moved within one point of the third-place Seattle Sounders in the Western Conference.

Nick Rimando finished with three saves for RSL (9-9-3, 30 points), which improved to 3-1-2 in its last six games and moved into a tie for seventh place and the final playoff spot with the Houston Dynamo.

Following a lackluster first half that saw the two teams combine for just five shot attempts and one shot on goal, Minnesota got on the scoreboard in 57th minute on Quintero's seventh goal of the season.

The score came off a corner kick by Jan Gregus into the middle of the box, and Mason Toye headed it to Quintero standing by the right post. He headed the ball into the net.

Real Salt Lake came back to tie it 13 minutes later on Silva's second goal of the season.

The score was set up by Jefferson Savarino, who took control of the ball outside the right side of the box and then hit an unmarked Silva with a crossing pass in the middle of the penalty box. Silva then quickly swung a right-footed shot through traffic and past Mannone.

Both teams had good chances to win it down the stretch. For RSL, Damir Kreilach's header from the middle of the box, off a Savarino cross, dribbled wide past the left post.

Gregus then nearly won it for the Loons in the 88th minute when his curling shot from the top left edge of the box hit the right post and bounced straight out, where Rimando quickly grabbed the rebound.
