Toronto FC earns big first-leg CCL win over Club America
Toronto FC picked up a critical 3-1 win over Club America in the first leg of their CONCACAF Champions League semifinal first leg at BMO Field on Tuesday night.
Sebastian Giovinco got the hosts in front early from the penalty spot, converting the kick that he earned after Edson Alvarez was whistled for tripping the Italian in the area.
America would strike back in the 21st minute, thought, as Andres Ibarguen tied the Toronto defense in knots with a mazy run before smashing a shot into the roof of Alex Bono's net.
But Toronto would retake the lead right before halftime when Giovinco sprang Jozy Altidore behind the America back-line and the U.S. international slotted a low line drive past Agustin Marchesin to make it 2-1 at the break.
There was some pushing and shoving in the tunnel as the teams entered into halftime, and America coach Miguel Herrera later accused police of assaulting his players.
Early in the second half, Greg Vanney's side doubled its lead with a well-worked team goal, as Marky Delgado played Auro into the penalty and the Brazilian played a perfect pass across goal for an onrushing Ashtone Morgan to slam into the America goal.
Trailing 3-1, America pushed hard for another away goal, but despite relentless pressure from the Liga MX club, Toronto FC's defense hung in for the two-goal win with Bono making a huge save on Henry Martin when he was all alone in on goal.
The loss was America's first on the road to an MLS team in CONCACAF Champions League and first in the competition since March 2015.
America will host Toronto at the Estadio Azteca in Mexico City for the decisive second leg on Wednesday, April 11.
