Wan Kuzain's first goal helps Sporting Kansas City down Minnesota United
Teenager Wan Kuzain scored his first professional goal in just his second game, Daniel Salloi and Cristian Lobato added first-half goals, and Sporting Kansas City cruised to a 4-1 victory over Minnesota United on Sunday night in Kansas City.
Diego Rubio completed the scoring late in the second half for Kansas City, which moved back above FC Dallas into first place in the Western Conference standings thanks to the win.
Tyrone Mears scored an early equalizer for Minnesota, which was outshot 49-14 over two games against Kansas City in the last three weekends.
Minnesota gutted out a 1-1 draw in the teams' previous meeting in Minneapolis. This time United had little chance of a comeback after being reduced to 10 men following Maximiano's ejection midway through the second half.
Kuzain's goal made him the second-youngest player to score in Kansas City club history. The 19-year-old Illinois native entered the match after 18 minutes in place of injured midfielder Yohan Croizet.
Kuzain put Kansas City up for good in the 35th minute, taking advantage of some sloppy Minnesota marking to get open in the penalty area and drive a shot that deflected off a defender on its way inside the left post.
Lobato made it 3-1 three minutes later on a shot from close range, set up by Roger Espinoza's incisive pass.
Kansas City's path to victory became even easier when Minnesota halftime substitute Maximiano received his second yellow card in 18 minutes for his 63rd-minute late tackle on Ilie Sanchez. It was the sixth ejection of an opposing player in Kansas City's games this season.
Rubio made it 4-1 in the 81st minute when he drove a low finish to goalie Bobby Shuttleworth's left from the left corner of the goal box.
Kansas City and Minnesota traded goals from distance early.
Salloi put SKC in front in the ninth minute with a 22-yard strike that sailed beyond Shuttleworth's dive.
Just over two minutes later, Mears tied it at one-all with a knuckling, 30-yard drive that wrong-footed KC goalkeeper Tim Melia on its way into the goal.
Melia was credited with two saves in the game while Shuttleworth stopped four shots.
