Ignacio Piatti on target as Montreal ends Sporting KC's unbeaten run

Ignacio Piatti and Alejandro Silva scored goals and Evan Bush stopped three shots to lead the Montreal Impact to a 2-0 victory over Western Conference co-leader Sporting Kansas City on Saturday night at Saputo Stadium in Montreal.

It was the fourth shutout in five games for Ethan Bush and third in a row.for Montreal, which began the season by losing 10 of its first 13 games, has now won four of its last five games and not conceded a goal in 342 minutes.

The loss snapped a nine-game unbeaten streak in all competitions and a seven-game unbeaten streak in MLS play for Sporting Kansas City. The club remains in a tie for first place in the Western Conference with FC Dallas. Tim Melia had three saves.

Piatti gave the Impact a 1-0 lead in the 54th minute when he rocketed a shot from just above the half circle at the top of penalty box into the top right corner of the net. It was the ninth goal of the season for the 33-year-old Argentine forward who was selected to the MLS All-Star team earlier this week.

Silva made it 2-0 in the 70th minute when he converted a penalty kick for his first goal as an Impact player. The goal was set up when Sporting defender Ike Opara was whistled for a foul on defender Daniel Lovitz in the penalty box. Piatti deferred to Silva to take the penalty, and the 28-year-old forward from Uruguay rolled a shot inside the right post as Melia guessed wrong and dived to the left side of the goal.

Sporting Kansas City nearly scored in the 77th minute when defender Graham Zusi's free kick from outside the box curled over the wall and was deflected by Bush and off the crossbar.

Both teams attempted just three shots during a lackluster first half that saw just one shot on target. That came in the ninth minute by Piatti, but the attempt was easily punched away by Melia.

Sporting Kansas City's best attempt came in the 37th minute when midfielder Yohan Croizet's right-footed shot from outside the penalty box zipped over the top of the crossbar.
