Michael Barrios nets hat trick as FC Dallas burns Sporting Kansas City

Forward Michael Barrios scored his first three goals of the season to lead first-place FC Dallas to a 3-2 victory over host Sporting Kansas City on Saturday night at Children's Mercy Park.

Barrios tallied in the 23rd, 62nd and 74th minutes for his first career hat trick as FC Dallas (42 points) improved its Western Conference lead to six points over LAFC.

The victory was FC Dallas' first in Kansas City since August 27, 2011. They were 0-8-2 in their previous 10 visits.

Forward Gerso Fernandes scored his second goal for slumping Sporting Kansas City (33 points), which is 0-4-1 over its past five matches. The club has allowed 16 goals over its past six matches after giving up just 14 over its first 15 contests.

Sporting Kansas City played without forward Johnny Russell (seven goals), who was a late scratch due to a knee injury suffered in a recent practice.

The contest was tied at 1-1 when Barrios tallied the tiebreaking goal 17 minutes into the second half.

It came after Barrios sprinted up the left side to receive a pass from midfielder Roland Lamah.

Sporting KC goalkeeper Tim Melia was caught between staying put or charging out before he headed toward where Barrios was on the outside of the box. Barrios booted the ball through Melia's legs and into the goal to give FC Dallas a 2-1 lead.

Twelve minutes later, Barrios was the recipient of the ball after a scramble in front of the net. He sent a blistering right-footed shot that caromed off the arms of Melia and into the net to give FC Dallas a two-goal lead.

Sporting KC moved within one in the 97th minute when forward Daniel Salloi scored his seventh goal of the season from close range.

Earlier, Barrios won a race for the ball in the 23rd minute and outmaneuvered Sporting KC defender Ike Opara and flicked the ball over the charging Melia and into the net.

FC Dallas had an opportunity to make it 2-0 in the 44th minute but a hard right-footed shot by forward Maxi Urruti was knocked away by a diving Melia.

The failure to convert was magnified early in the second half when Fernandes split two FC Dallas defenders and ripped a left-footed dart past goalkeeper Jesse Gonzalez to tie it at 1 in the 50th minute.
