Scunthorpe seal play-off spot with Plymouth win

Scunthorpe secured their place in the League One play-offs with a comfortable 2-0 success over fellow promotion hopefuls Plymouth.Just two points and a single place separated the two teams going into the clash, but goals from Hakeeb Adelakun and Ivan Toney proved the difference in a game the hosts dominated.Argyle's fight to prolong their season will go to the final day, but they must win at Gillingham, hope Charlton lose at relegation-threatened Rochdale and also overturn a six-goal deficit to climb into the top six.In an entertaining contest, Adelekun fired Scunthorpe ahead in the 32nd minute with a goal from nowhere, picking up the ball in the middle of the park before striding forward and finding the bottom corner.Matt Gilks used a strong fist to foil Graham Carey as Plymouth sought an instant response, before visiting goalkeeper Remi Matthews came to his side's rescue by denying Josh Morris when the hosts broke quickly up field.Plymouth boss Derek Adams made a double substitution at the break but - after a bright start to the second half - his side fell two goals behind when Toney cleverly diverted a low cross into the far corner of the net with his heel. The Iron could have won more comfortably, with Ryan Yates twice seeing headers kept out and skipper Rory McArdle having an effort ruled out for offside.
