Paris Saint-Germain edge Roma on penalties in Detroit

Paris Saint-Germain got their International Champions Cup (ICC) campaign underway with a 5-3 penalty win over Roma after an initial 1-1 draw in normal time at Comerica Park in Detroit on Wednesday.

PSG defender Marquinhos showed his attacking instincts to open the scoring in the 36th minute after being teed up by Jese Rodriguez, who led the line in a strong starting XI fielded by coach Unai Emery.

Emery was without the likes of Marco Verratti, Angel Di Maria, Edinson Cavani and Thomas Meunier, who were all left behind in Miami in order to continue to work on their match fitness, so opted for a 4-2-3-1 formation with Jese at the tip of the attack.

Dani Alves made his first appearance at right-back, while fellow summer signing Yuri Berchiche was also introduced during the second half for his first outing in PSG colours.

Roma equalised through Sadiq Umar on the hour mark but Gerson, who provided the assist, later saw his penalty saved by Alphonse Areola -- who was preferred to Kevin Trapp between the sticks for PSG -- to gift Marquinhos the winning spot-kick.

Every member of the travelling party except Trapp featured in Detroit -- who is now likely to play against Tottenham Hotspur in Orlando at the weekend -- and youngsters like Lorenzo Callegari, Antoine Bernede and Odsonne Edouard were given chances to catch Emery's eye.

Despite the draw in regular time, the penalty victory means the result counts as a 2-1 win for PSG -- who now lead the North American section of the ICC and will be keen to win their third consecutive title.
