Manchester United beat Real Madrid on penalties in ICC

SANTA CLARA, Calif. -- Manchester United's David De Gea was the penalty shootout hero in Sunday's International Champions Cup win against Real Madrid at Levi's Stadium.

The Spain international saved two Madrid spot kicks in the shootout win for United after the game finished 1-1 after 90 minutes of regular time.

England winger Jesse Lingard opened the scoring for the Premier League side after some magic from Anthony Martial just before half-time.

The La Liga giants equalised midway through the second half through Casemiro's spot kick, won by Theo Hernandez on his debut for Los Blancos.

A woeful shootout saw Martial, Scott McTominay and Victor Lindelof miss for United, while Mateo Kovacic, Oscar Garcia, Theo and Casemiro failed to convert for Madrid.

Amid the mayhem, only Madrid youngster Luis Miguel Quezeda converted for his side, while Henrikh Mkhitaryan and Daley Blind kept their heads to score.

Blancos coach Zinedine Zidane named a strong XI for his team's first ICC outing of the summer, while Reds boss Jose Mourinho shuffled his pack in their fourth preseason game giving chances to youngsters Timothy Fosu-Mensah and Andreas Pereira.

The busy Lingard came closest early on with a 20 yard shot which stung the hands of Madrid goalkeeper Keylor Navas, and later in the half was unlucky when another long-ranger zipped a few inches wide.

The back-to-back Champions League holders' had plenty of the ball, with new No. 10 Luka Modric and Galactico winger Gareth Bale showing their class in possession, but were unable to pass their way through a United defence which looked well drilled for so early in the season.

Through a first 44 minutes which was unsurprisingly slow-paced due to the 90 degree midday California heat, the loudest cheers came for the nimble Modric ghosting away from the gangling Marouane Fellaini.

There was some real impact on top of the entertainment soon afterwards, when lovely footwork saw Martial dance past three Madrid defenders, before he squared the ball unselfishly to allow Lingard to knock home from close range.

Wholesale changes at half-time saw Zidane introduce an entire new XI, handing experience to seven relatively unknown kids from the youth system.

Meanwhile, Mourinho stiffened his line-up, bringing in top internationals Paul Pogba, Ander Herrera, Romelu Lukaku and De Gea, although the Premier League side suffered a blow soon afterwards with midfielder Herrera forced back off the pitch with a rib injury.

United understandably pushed on and new £75 million centre-forward Lukaku should really have made it 2-0, but the ex-Everton man just missed a wickedly whipped in Blind cross.

It was 1-1 midway through the half when Hernandez burst forward in characteristically spectacular fashion, only to be sent flying by the slow arriving United centre-half Lindelof. Casemiro gave De Gea no chance by hammering the penalty to the top corner.

Zidane's impressively plucky kids almost sprung another surprise when Luis Miguel Quezada's clever free kick sent De Gea scrambling to cover at his near post.

At the other end Fellaini could position his body quickly enough and a cross cannoned off his knee and flew wide -- leading to the late penalty drama.
