Chivas lift Copa MX after penalty win over Morelia

GUADALAJARA, Mexico - Goalkeeper Miguel Jimenez saved three penalties as Chivas defeated Morelia 3-1 in a shootout Wednesday to lift the Copa MX, after the game ended 0-0 after 90 minutes.

Chivas had dominated the match in front of 42,329 fans in Estadio Chivas, with Morelia showing very little in the final third.

Carlos Fierro came close with two shots in the first half and provided a perfect cross for Alan Pulido in the 49th minute, but Morelia keeper Sosa saved from close range.

Substitute Eduardo Lopez curled a left-footed shot from the edge of the penalty area, with Sosa again stretching to push it away from goal.

The game opened up as penalties approached, but it was Jimenez who ended up the hero.

Carlos Salcido had seen his opening penalty saved by Sosa and when Mario Osuna stepped up to convert for Morelia it looked as though the tie had swung in the away team's favor, until Jimenez saved the next three penalties to win the cup for Chivas.

The trophy was Chivas' first in Estadio Chivas, which opened in 2010 with a friendly against Manchester United.

Morelia will now concentrate on the relegation battle, with the team from the state of Michoacan only one point above last-placed Veracruz.

For Chivas, the goal is now to win the 2017 Liga MX Clausura title and end a drought extending over 10 years.
