FC Copenhagen hammer Club Brugge with second-half surge

FC Copenhagen claimed a comfortable 4-0 victory over Club Brugge in Champions League Group G at Telia Parken on Tuesday night.

Following an uneventful first half, the second came to life with goals from Thomas Delaney, Federico Santander and Mathias Jorgensen - after an own goal from Stefano Denswil - plus a missed penalty from Ludwig Augustinsson.

The first chance of the game fell to Sweden defender Augustinsson, but his free-kick just outside the Brugge box - heading for the top-right corner - was held out by Ludovic Butelle.

Jose Izquierdo fired Hans Vanaken's cross wide as the visitors searched for an opener, while Lions goalkeeper Robin Olsen safely collected Claudemir's header midway through the first half to deny them a score from their best chance so far.

The hosts came back with a chance of their own on the half-hour mark but Denmark striker Andreas Cornelius failed to find the back of the net as Butelle was on hand to halt his header.

Butelle also denied Santander before Delaney headed over the crossbar as Stale Solbakken's hosts looked likely to go ahead at the break.

The away side almost broke the deadlock at the start of the second half with two good efforts from Izquierdo but it was Copenhagen that made their hard work count as former Ajax defender Denswil was unfortunate to put Peter Ankersen's cross into his own net from close range after 53 minutes.

On the hour mark, the hosts were awarded a penalty after Denswil brought down Santander and Butelle did well with a full-stretch save to kept out Augustinsson's resulting spot-kick to keep his side in the game.

But Delaney fired in his fourth goal from the last three games just outside the 18-yard box, picking up Benjamin Verbic's headed pass and finding the top corner before team-mate Santander tapped home Augustinsson's corner with 20 minutes remaining.

It was not over yet and Mathias Jorgensen fired in a late fourth for the home side at the death to see them remain second in the standings, two points behind leaders Leicester, while Brugge hold up the Group G table after two defeats.
