10-man Senegal held by Burkina Faso

Senegal missed a big opportunity to move to the top of African World Cup qualifying Group D after playing to a goalless home draw with Burkina Faso on Saturday.

Despite boasting the likes of Sadio Mane and Moussa Sow in their attacking arsenal, it was not to be on the night for the Lions of Teranga, who could not breach a stubborn Burkinabe rearguard.

It is a significant setback for Senegal as a win would have moved them to six points, top of the group, with three rounds of matches left. Making matters worse will be a suspension for centre-back Kalidou Koulibaly after he was sent off for a second bookable offence in the 84th minute.

As things stand after the 0-0 draw, Burkina Faso remain top of Group D with five points, followed by Senegal and South Africa on four points, and Cape Verde on three.

Cape Verde stunned a poor Bafana Bafana 2-1 in the group's first fixture on Friday, opening up the group completely.

Senegal have arguably the tougher route to qualification now as they still have to travel to Burkina Faso and Cape Verde, while South Africa have two home games to come before a final-round clash in Senegal which could be a decider or sorts.

Burkina Faso host Senegal and South Africa entertain Cape Verde on Tuesday in the fourth round.
