Liverpool celebrated Jurgen Klopp signing a contract extension with a good workout and a 1-0 win over Tranmere Rovers in their first preseason game of the 2016-17 campaign on Friday. Danny Ings netted the only goal of the night at Prenton Park late in the second half following an impressive assist by 17-year-old Trent Alexander-Arnold. Klopp has previously said he sees friendlies as just "another session" in his preseason training schedule, but he certainly won't mind his side getting into the habit of winning when he can. Three of Liverpool's new signings -- Joel Matip, Loris Karius and Sadio Mane -- were given their first starts, and both teams Klopp put out in either half featured plenty of promising youngsters -- including Ovie Ejaria, Ben Woodburn and the exciting Alexander-Arnold. Liverpool looked energetic, bright and penetrative in possession. There were also encouraging signs from Mane, who was the visitors' biggest threat on the night, cutting in from the right-hand side and making himself a nuisance. The Senegal international almost ended up on the scoresheet, but in a one-on-one situation he was denied by a good save from Scott Davies in Tranmere's goal. Liverpool were given a fright by their nonleague opposition in the first half when they were caught out as Connor Jennings hit the post from a corner. Fielding an entirely different XI after the interval, Liverpool remained in control -- albeit susceptible to the counter-attack. It was the Reds' turn to hit the woodwork in the 67th minute when Lazar Markovic -- fresh from his loan spell last season at Fenerbahce -- somehow struck the post of a gaping goal after Ings' effort was parried by former Everton custodian Iain Turner. But with help from a fearless Alexander-Arnold run, Liverpool got the goal they deserved 12 minutes later through Ings to round off a good "session."
