Quincy Promes scores two as Netherlands ease past Belarus

Quincy Promes scored his first two international goals as Netherlands overpowered Belarus 4-1 in their World Cup qualifier in Rotterdam.

The Spartak Moscow winger struck twice in the first half to put the Dutch in control before Alexei Rios pulled one back in the Group A fixture.

But any prospect of a fightback was swiftly extinguished by Davy Klaassen, and Vincent Janssen added a fourth for the hosts.

Holland will now make the short journey to Amsterdam in good heart for Monday's clash with France.

The hosts had already spurned a handful of chances when Promes gave them the lead with a well-taken strike after 15 minutes.

Promes doubled the lead with a volley after 31 minutes before Belarus finally started to threaten with Sergei Kornilenko, Sergei Politevich and Mikhail Gordeichuk all missing the target.

Their pressure paid off early in the second half as Rios raced onto a good pass from Kornilenko and struck from close range.

That stirred Holland back into life and Klaassen pounced to extend the lead on 56 minutes after a Janssen strike came back off the post.

Tottenham forward Janssen was not to be denied himself and added a fourth soon after by smashing a shot into the roof of the net from a tight angle following a good run.

Holland might have had more with Liverpool's Georginio Wijnaldum hitting the woodwork and Virgil van Dijk having a chance. Promes had another attempt on goal in the last minute but was denied a hat trick.
