Cape Verde Islands claim shock win over second-string Portugal

Portugal felt the absence of Cristiano Ronaldo as they suffered a shock 2-0 loss to Cape Verde Islands on Tuesday.

Head coach Fernando Santos fielded an entirely different starting XI to that which beat Serbia 2-1 in their Euro 2016 qualifier on Sunday.

And Cape Verde Islands made them pay as first-half goals from Odair Fortes and Gege sealed a surprise win for Cape Verde Islands.

Fortes broke the deadlock as his cross-shot caught out goalkeeper Anthony Lopes before Gege doubled their lead by finishing at the back post.

Portugal's misery was compounded when defender Andre Pinto was sent off on the hour mark for a foul on Heldon.

Cape Verde Islands are ranked 38th in FIFA's world rankings compared to Portugal in seventh.

Portugal are top of their Euro 2016 qualifying Group I with the country two points clear after four matches played.
