Five-star Marseille thrash Reims

Andre-Pierre Gignac added another two goals to his tally as Marseille cemented their position at the top of Ligue 1 with a 5-0 victory at Reims.

Gignac is top of the scoring charts with eight goals from seven games after recovering from missing an early penalty to slot another brace.

Andre Ayew also scored twice and Giannelli Imbula added a fifth 17 minutes from time.

Reims had bounced back from a poor start to the season with back-to-back wins but their revival came to a shuddering halt on Tuesday night.

The hosts might have taken the lead in only the third minute when Gaetan Charbonnier headed inches off target from Mads Albaek's free-kick.

Four minutes later Dimitri Payet was fouled in the box to earn Marseille a penalty but Johny Placide guessed the right way to save Gignac's penalty.

However, a minute later the striker atoned for his miss by heading in Benjamin Mendy's cross.

In the 19th minute Gignac had his second, seizing on the loose ball after Placide had saved Florian Thauvin's shot.

Marseille had to wait until six minutes after half-time for their next goal, Brice Dja Djedje the creator this time for Ayew to head in.

Kossi Agassa had replaced Placide but he was soon picking the ball out of his net for a second time, Ayew netting again seven minutes after his first following an Agassa save from Thauvin.

And the goalscoring was completed in the 73rd minute when Romain Alessandrini broke away down the right and crossed for Imbula to tuck away a smart finish.
