Hungary earn first win of campaign away to Faroe Islands

Hungary secured their first win of the Euro 2016 qualifying campaign on Tuesday evening, but made hard work of Group F minnows the Faroe Islands in Torshavn.

Adam Szalai netted the game's only goal in the 21st minute, the Hoffenheim striker left unmarked at the far post to turn home Roland Juhasz's cross after Frodi Benjaminsen had only half cleared a Balazs Dzsudzsak corner.

The 1-0 win lifted Pal Dardai's side on to four points from three games, with the pointless visitors remaining rock-bottom of the pool.

Faroes goalkeeper Gunnar Nielsen kept out an effort from Dzsudzsak just before the goal, and did well again to deny Nermanja Nikolic and keep his side only one down just before the half-hour mark.

Hallur Hansson had decent chances for the Faroes at either end of the first half but failed to seriously test Hungary goalkeeper Denes Dibusz.

Szalai and Dzsudzsak had opportunities after the interval to stretch the Hungarians' advantage, but they could find no way past Nielsen.
