Liechtenstein claim point against Montenegro

Liechtenstein held firm to deny Montenegro and earn a goalless draw at the Rheinpark Stadion, despite losing first-choice keeper Peter Jehle to injury in the second half.

After being thrashed 4-0 by Russia in their first Euro 2016 qualifying match, Liechtenstein were a much tougher nut to crack on Thursday night and had a number of chances to nick it themselves.

Montenegro will be kicking themselves for not putting their hosts to the sword, though, especially after Jehle had to be replaced in the 62nd minute.

Despite fluffing their lines, Montenegro sit second in Group G as one of three teams on four points, while Liechtenstein are second from bottom after getting off the mark.

The hosts, who are 129 places below their opponents in FIFA's world rankings, almost took a surprise lead in the fourth minute.

Seyhan Yildiz found space inside the box to latch onto Franz Burgmeier's cross, but the FC Balzers forward could only send his weak header over the bar.

After that the visitors predictably took control of the contest, with Simon Vukcevic and Elsad Zverotic both going close, but Liechtenstein keeper Jehle held firm to keep it goalless at the break.

Neither side looked like scoring as the second half stuttered into life, but things took a turn for the worse for Liechtenstein when Jehle was forced off through injury and had to be replaced by Cengiz Bicer.

Manchester City striker Stevan Jovetic went close to heading Montenegro in front five minutes later, but Bicer showed he was alert by pulling off a decent save and he was largely untroubled for the rest of the game.
