Real Madrid's Martin Odegaard suffers broken metatarsal in Heerenveen game

Real Madrid's Martin Odegaard is unlikely to play again this season after breaking a metatarsal in what could have been his final game on loan at Dutch club Heerenveen.

Odegaard, 19, has contributed three goals and five assists in 37 starts for the Eredivisie side and gained experience away from the Bernabeu.

But the Norway international suffered the injury during Sunday's 2-1 victory at Heracles, with Heerenveen releasing a statement in which they said tests had confirmed the broken bone.

Odegaard joined Madrid in January 2015, aged just 16, in a deal worth a potential €8 million.

He has mostly played for Madrid's Castilla youth side, making one substitute Primera Division appearance and a Copa del Rey start.

Speaking while on international duty last month, he said no decision had so far been made on where he would play next season.

"Later, we will see what happens," he said. "It could be [another loan], but this is not the right moment to speak about it."
