Real Betis appoint Quique Setien as new head coach

Real Betis have appointed Quique Setien as coach for the next three seasons, the Spanish club announced on Friday.

Setien guided Las Palmas to a 14th-place finish in the 2016-17 campaign but did not sign a contract extension with the Canary Islands-based club.

A statement from Betis read: "Real Betis Balompie have signed Spanish coach Quique Setien as the new verdiblanco coach for the next three seasons. Setien will be tied to the club until June 2020.

"With Setien's arrival, Real Betis point to a style of play that is closer to what Betis fans demand."

Setien takes over a Betis side that is in dire need of a change after a disappointing campaign which saw them win 10 and lose 19 of their 38 games to finish 15th in the standings.

The 58-year-old takes over from Victor Sanchez del Amo, who was dismissed earlier this month after a dismal run of results. The bad stretch saw Betis lose six of eight league games and club president Angel Haro described the displays as "disgraceful performances."

Victor had replaced Gus Poyet in November and former Betis captain Alexis Trujillo guided the team in the final two games.

A former Racing Santander and Atletico Madrid player, Setien arrived at Las Palmas in October 2015 and guided the team to an 11th-place finish.

Las Palmas enjoyed a strong first half of the 2016-17 campaign and had hopes of finishing in the European qualifying positions but took one point in their final seven games.

Setien bid farewell to Las Palmas on Thursday and posted a farewell letter on his Twitter account with the message: "Yesterday I was in yellow [Las Palmas colours], today I'm in green [Betis colours]. Yesterday I was sad for what I lost and today I'm happy for what I've found. Hello and thank you."
