Henry Onyekuru is Nigeria's Champions League torchbearer

Daniel Amokachi, playing for Club Brugges, scored the first goal of the revamped UEFA Champions League 26 years ago, and in Amokachi's Nigeria the tournament continues to enthral and beguile.

With just three weeks to go until the competition returns, an array of Super Eagles players will line up in an attempt to make just the sort of mark, or even better, that Amokachi and other Nigerians have made in years past.

But they'll have a tough time of it. Eight Nigerians are on the books of seven clubs who will be involved in the European showpiece tournament, but none of the clubs are considered real contenders, though Benfica and FC Porto are former champions.

With Henry Onyekuru's Galatasaray in the same Group as Bryan Idowu's Lokomotiv Moscow and the Porto of Chidozie Awaziem and Kelechi Nwakali, at least one club with a Nigerian is guaranteed a place in the knockout phase.

Onyekuru is the standout who will be expected to feature prominently for his club in the competition. On current and previous form, with two goals in his last two games, he should be one to catch the eye, especially against mid-level opposition.

Awaziem is yet to come off the bench so far for FC Porto, and if he is to make any appearance for them in the Champions League, it will hard to see it as anything beyond nominal.

It is a similar situation for Idowu at Lokomotiv. The World Cup left back has been stuck riding pine in all five games for which he was listed by Lokomotiv... Not a good sign for his Champions League prospects.

It is slightly more testing for Kayode Olanrewaju's Shakhtar Donetsk, who face a daunting challenge in Group F with Manchester City, Lyon and Hoffenheim.

Incidentally, Olanrewaju joined Shakhtar from City without ever kicking a ball in anger for the English champions. Olanrewaju has also not featured as yet for Shaktar since making his loan move permanent, but should expect to do so soon.

Ubong Ekpai has underwhelmed so far at Viktoria Plzen, and it is unlikely he will be seeing major minutes against the likes of Real Madrid, Roma and CSKA Moscow.

Monaco are unlikely to have Elderson Echiejile in their squad at any time, while Tyronne Ebuehi is out with a long term injury. By the time he returns, it would be way too late to get him on the Befinca squad.

And while Kelechi Nwakali is a hot prospect, he will need to set Porto's B side on fire to make the jump, not just to the A squad but to the Champions League.
