Can anything stop Junior Lokosa's remarkable scoring streak?

Kano Pillars clash with Enyimba LMC Media

Junior Lokosa netted his 14th league goal of the season for Kano Pillars in their midweek trouncing of FC Ifeanyi Ubah on matchday 15, and is on course to surpass the NPFL's goalscoring record for a single season.

The record currently stands at 23, achieved by Mfon Udoh in 2014, but having averaged a goal a game so far, Lokosa is primed to smash that return.

Remarkably, this is Lokosa's debut campaign in the top flight - making his achievement all the more impressive - but there are various hurdles which he must overcome if he's to write history.

Here are three possible obstacles which may deny him a record-breaking season.

The lure of a foreign deal: This is a regular issue in a league where player's remunerations are irregular and the desire to attract the attention of national team selectors encourages players to jump ship at the slightest opportunity.

While Kano Pillars, to their credit, are renowned as one of the most professionally run football clubs in Nigeria, Lokosa might be tempted to earn a better contract overseas if and when the opportunity comes knocking.

At 24, he isn't the youngest, and will realise that his market value is rarely likely to be as high as it is now.

Loss of form: Often, the distraction of the prospect of playing professionally beyond Nigeria has led to hitherto standout players losing concentration, commitment and ultimately suffering a massive dip in form.

Stephen Odey is a prime example.

Despite scoring 15 goals from 17 games in the first round of the league last season for MFM FC, he failed to maintain his consistency in the second round, becoming a shadow of himself before earning a deal with FC Zurich at the 99th hour.

If Lokosa decides to go down that same road in the event of numerous promises from agents, Pillars could begin to question his professionalism and loyalty.

This occurrence could possibly lead to a face-off with the management, an extended goal drought and missing out on the chance to become a record-breaker.

Injury: Injuries cannot be avoided and remain the great fear for many a professional athlete.

Even if Lokosa maintains his focus and remains in the division until the season's end, there's little he could do should injury strike and reduce his game time.

It would certainly be a frustrating conclusion for a player in the form of his life, and for fans who genuinely believe that Udoh's record could be smashed.
