Plateau United stunned in Aiteo Cup

Recently crowned NPFL champions Plateau United were shocked 2-0 away at Niger Tornadoes in their Aiteo Cup quarter-final first leg.

United were expected to see off their rivals in the North Central Derby, but were stunned by their hosts, with Tornadoes delivering an exceptional display.

Ebenezer Odeyemi opened the scoring in the 43rd minute to stun the reigning NPFL champs, before Bolaji Adeyemo added a second 16 minutes from time.

To make matters worse for United, Kabiru Umar was sent off at the death for a second bookable offensive, leaving Kennedy Boboye with a gap to fill in his offensive line ahead of Saturday's return match at the Rwang Pam Stadium in Jos.

Elsewhere, Sunshine Stars were also on the receiving end of a shock result as they were beaten 1-0 by Osun United in the South West Derby, with Tosin Omoyele scoring the only goal of the game.

The Nigeria National League outfit stunned their more illustrious foe, despite a 39th-minute dismissal of Emmanuel Osigwe, but had Omoyele to thank after a lively display which constantly troubled the NPFL side's backline.

Dayo Ojo and Sikiru Alimi both missed glaring chances for Stars, who have it all to do in the return leg on Saturday in Akure.

Elsewhere, cup holders FC Ifenayi Ubah cruised past recently relegated ABS FC after Godwin Obaje's 27th-minute penalty, before Sulaiman added a second and Obaje added a second.

Visiting goalkeeper Drissa Bamba also deserves credit for denying Wasiu Alalade, when the former First Bank goal poacher thought he'd nabbed an equaliser.

The fourth quarter final, between Akwa United and Katsina United Feeders, has been postponed until Sunday.
