Former Egypt international Ahmed Hossam 'Mido' has urged England coach Gareth Southgate to drop Kyle Walker after the Three Lions defeated Colombia in their Last 16 clash in Moscow on Tuesday.
England were denied a victory in normal time after Yerry Mina's 92nd-minute header cancelled out Harry Kane's penalty opener, but battled back during the shootout to win 4-3.
Despite an encouraging performance by England, ex-Tottenham Hotspur forward Mido believes that another former Spur, Walker, ought to be dropped for the upcoming quarter final against Sweden.
"Southgate has got lots of things to think about," he wrote on his @midoahm Twitter handle. "I don't think Walker is the right man to play as a centre-back in that system.
"[On Tuesday] he again gave the ball away and [Juan] Cuadrado was so kind not to score," he added. "[In the] second half, he jumped for a cross with his arm high, [he was] lucky it didn't touch him."
Instead of the Manchester City wideman, Mido believes that Dier, who came on as a substitute against Colombia and netted the winning penalty, would be a better bet for the Last 8 clash with the Swedes.
"Dier will be much better if he starts for England," Mido continued. "They looked much more solid when he came on last night.
"True he is not as quick as Walker, but [he's a] better defender and much better on the ball.
"You don't need the pace of Walker against Sweden as much as the power and brain of Dier."
England's victory over Colombia was their first knockout triumph in a major competition since they defeated Ecuador 1-0 at the 2006 World Cup, and represented their first success in a penalty shootout since Spain were defeated in the quarter final of the 1996 European Championships at Wembley.
The winner of the Three Lions' meeting with Sweden will face either Russia or Croatia in the semi finals.
