Manchester United must do better next season - Jesse Lingard

Manchester United must kick on again next season after their FA Cup final defeat to Chelsea, midfielder Jesse Lingard has said.

United finished second in the Premier League -- their best since Sir Alex Ferguson retired in 2013 -- as well as reaching Saturday's final, but after their first campaign in three years without a trophy, Lingard said there must be progress next season.

"A lot of teams go through transition periods and we'll progress for next season," he told the United website.

"We'll pick ourselves up and go again. We have to reflect on our season and look back on the highs and the lows.

"We'll look back and see where we can improve and push ourselves to do better next season."

Lingard described the Wembley defeat to Chelsea as his "worst moment in football" -- his first final defeat after previous wins in the FA Cup, League Cup and Europa League.

"It's always going to be hard when you see the other team lifting a trophy," he said. "When you have to walk up those stairs and collect the runners-up medal, it's hard.

"It's my first time doing it and hopefully I won't be doing it again."
