Manchester United need more experienced players to compete - Nemanja Matic

LONDON, England -- Nemanja Matic has urged Manchester United to splash the cash on reinforcements this summer.

The Serbian midfielder, one of Jose Mourinho's close-season signings last July, would like to see more "experience" added to the squad at Old Trafford as they look to take another step forward in the Premier League and the Champions League.

"I think we need some players with some experience to bring some more qualities to our team," said Matic following United's 1-0 loss to Chelsea in the FA Cup final on Saturday.

"After that, we can fight for the title and the Champions League also."

United recorded their best league finish for five years but still ended up 19 points behind runaway champions Manchester City.

They also came up short in Europe and were dumped out of the Champions League by Sevilla -- who finished seventh in La Liga -- in the quarterfinals.

Matic believes there has been progress but the 29-year-old admits the pressure will be on next season to win some silverware after a trophy-less campaign.

"This is football," he said.

"When you don't win one year, the next year is always more pressure. When you play for the club, Manchester United, [it] is a normal thing and we have to accept that and deal with that."

Chelsea lifted the FA Cup at Wembley thanks to Eden Hazard's first-half penalty after the Belgium international had been fouled by Phil Jones.

Jones will have a week off before joining up with the England squad ahead of the World Cup this summer and Matic has backed the defender to bounce back.

"Everyone can make a mistake," he said.

"Sometimes I do mistakes but this is football. He worked for sure to do the best for the team -- he always fights for the team.

"I can't blame him because he always gives 100 percent. He needs to forget and be focused on the next challenge."
