Jesse Lingard: Competition for Manchester United places is healthy

MANCHESTER -- Jesse Lingard has told ESPN FC he would welcome another new arrival at Manchester United this summer, even if that means having to fight harder for a place in the team.

United manager Jose Mourinho wants to add another winger to his squad before Aug. 31.

United have spent close to £150 million to bring Romelu Lukaku, Nemanja Matic and Victor Lindelof to Old Trafford this summer, but Mourinho wants one more player to "come from the sides."

He has been linked with both Inter Milan's Ivan Perisic and Real Madrid's Gareth Bale -- two players who would be in direct competition with Lingard.

But the 24-year-old, on the bench for the 4-0 Premier League win over West Ham on Sunday, said another addition would be welcome.

"Man United is one of the biggest clubs in the world and we're going to attract the best players," he said at the unveiling of a new mural at Old Trafford's Stretford End.

"Healthy competition is always good for us. It helps the squad as well with the depth. We had quite a few injuries last season, so it's good to have different options.

"Everyone is working hard in training, and then it's up to the manager to pick the squad."

Lingard scored five goals in all competitions last season, but only one came in the Premier League and he said United players needed to help add more firepower this season.

"Our mindset and mentality has changed going into games," he added. "We know we need to score more goals, to be winning 2-0 and 3-0 and making sure we kill the game.

"It's important that we all are all scoring. We can't just rely on Rom [Lukaku] to get all the goals, the wingers and the midfielders have got to chip in as well."

Lingard said Lukaku was settling in "very well" following his £75 million transfer from Everton, adding: "The [preseason] tour helps, getting to know to the lads. He's kept his feet on the ground and he's looking to work hard.

"I think it's just been a natural bond. We've got a lot of things in common, and that has helped him settle straight away. His confidence is going up and up each week."

England international Lingard has also been impressed by Serbia midfielder Matic and said he felt it was "surprising" that Chelsea had let him go.

"You saw his performance on Sunday," he said. "He's a stable player and he's got the long and short-range passing.

"He does get around the park and he does a good job of breaking things up. He's tough to train against. He's a lot taller than I thought, which should help at set pieces."

The new arrivals, along with the impressive win over West Ham, have given Lingard belief that United can end their four-year wait for a Premier League title.

But he warned: "We can't get too ahead of ourselves. It's only the first game of the season but it's a strong start, and if we can keep it going in the next three or four games, keep that consistency, we'll see where we are.

"The league is massively important. We've won the FA Cup, the League Cup and the Europa League, and the more trophies the better."
