Manchester United's Victor Valdes has Standard Liege loan cut short

Manchester United goalkeeper Victor Valdes' loan spell at Standard Liege has been cut short and will conclude at the end of this week.

The former Barcelona goalkeeper had originally signed for Liege for the rest of the season, having joined the club in January. The 34-year-old had played just twice for United -- both in May 2015 against Arsenal and Hull City in the league -- after joining in January 2015.

Valdes had been denied a squad number and the opportunity to train with the first team this season after manager Louis van Gaal alleged that the player had refused to play for the reserves.

Valdes and Ioannis Maniatis, who was on loan from Olympiakos, both had their loans ended by the Belgian club, who said in a statement: "As we decided to give more playtime to the youth players at the end of the season and because they couldn't be selected for medical reasons, the Spanish goalkeeper and the Greek midfielder have decided in agreement with the club to finish their loan at the end of this week.

"Standard de Liège wants to thank Ioannis and Victor for everything they did for our club, especially during the successful campaign on the way to the Belgian Cup [with both men playing in the final, won 2-1 against Club Brugge]. We also wish them the best in the rest of their professional career."
