Mamelodi Sundowns moved five points clear at the top of the PSL with a 1-0 victory over Maritzburg United as one of their major rivals stumbled in their title bid.

It is increasingly looking like Sundowns' title to lose as their handsome lead comes with them also having played three games fewer than second-placed Orlando Pirates.

With SuperSport United losing 1-0 at Free State Stars, Sundowns are now 10 points ahead of their Tshwane rivals, although the former have three games in hand.

Percy Tau scored the only goal against Maritzburg with a fine run and finish, his fifth goal of the season and third in as many games.

Maritzburg had their chances, especially in the first half, but Lebohang Maboe put a shot wide from a good position and, a few minutes later, was also denied by Sundowns keeper Dennis Onyango.

Themba Zwane glanced a header wide for the home side, while Tau could not finish after rounding Maritzburg keeper Richard Ofori.

The victory means Sundowns have taken 16 points from the last 18 available, making them easily the form side in the competition.

A tired-looking SuperSport failed to fire in the Free State as Siphelele Mthembu scored the only goal of the game in the first half.

SuperSport were reduced to half-chances, the best of which fell to New Zealand forward Jeremy Brockie, but his 'fresh-air' shot summed up the effort of the CAF Confederation Cup finalists, who look in desperate need of a break.
