MLS Power Rankings: FC Dallas stumble as New York Red Bulls hold top spot

1. New York Red Bulls

Record: W21-D5-L7
Week 32 ranking: 1

It took a penalty for the Red Bulls to get past the Union in a tense, physical match in Chester, but if you don't lose, you can't get knocked off the top spot. New York heads into Week 34 with a chance at the Supporters Shield.

2. Atlanta United

Record: 21-6-6
Week 32 ranking: 2

United managed to handle the Fire at Mercedes-Benz Stadium on Sunday thanks to a surprise goal from Franco Escobar (his first of the year) and a Chicago own goal. Next week Atlanta plays for a Supporters Shield and a pair of MLS records in Toronto.

3. Seattle Sounders FC

Record: 17-5-11
Week 32 ranking: 4

The Sounders locked up a playoff spot with a victory in Orlando on Wednesday, then held on in Houston for a 3-2 win on Sunday. Seattle will face San Jose on the final weekend with a legitimate shot at second place and a bye to the conference semis.

4. Sporting Kansas City

Record: 17-8-8
Week 32 ranking: 6

Sporting went on the road twice this week, first to Vancouver, then to Frisco. They won both and leapt over FC Dallas into first place in the process. Decision Day is big: A home tilt against third-place LAFC with seeding on the line.

5. D.C. United

Record: 14-8-11
Week 32 ranking: 7

After a midweek win over Toronto, Wayne Rooney & Co. kept rolling on Sunday with a 3-1 win at home over NYCFC. The win locked up DC's playoff spot. United will be in Chicago next week, playing for a chance at a home playoff game.

6. Portland Timbers

Record: 15-9-9
Week 32 ranking: 8

The Timbers earned their place in the playoffs with an emphatic 3-0 win over Real Salt Lake. The win puts Portland in play for a home playoff game if it can win in Week 34 against Vancouver and get a little help.

7. FC Dallas

Record: 16-9-8
Week 32 ranking: 3

Oscar Pareja's team had first place in their hands heading into the weekend. But a loss to Sporting Kansas City means they'll need Sporting and LAFC to do less than win -- while FCD wins on the road in Colorado.

8. LAFC

Record: 16-9-8
Week 32 ranking: 5

Up a goal at home against Vancouver, LAFC conceded a soft goal from distance to drop two points and see their chances of first place take a hit. The trip to Kansas City next week will be jam-packed with drama thanks to its potential impact on the final standings.

9. Philadelphia Union

Record: 15-5-13
Week 32 ranking: 9

The Union's loss to the Red Bulls at Talen Energy Stadium means that while Philadelphia is in the playoffs, their chances at hosting a playoff game in the knockout round are a little dicey. Next week's visit to Yankee Stadium is massive.

10. LA Galaxy

Record: 13-9-11
Week 32 ranking: 12

Zlatan Ibrahimovic produced more of his magic and the Galaxy took a massive step toward the playoffs with a 3-1 win in Minnesota. LA's season now comes down to Decision Day, when a win against Houston will launch them over RSL and into the sixth spot in the West.

11. Real Salt Lake

Record: 14-7-13
Week 32 ranking: 10

The regular season is over for RSL. After a Thursday night win that aided their playoff chances immensely, the team laid an egg in Portland. Mike Petke's and his team are now huge Dynamo fans -- they need Houston to beat LA next week to get in.

12. Montreal Impact

Record: 14-4-15
Week 32 ranking: 14

The Impact earned themselves at least a stay of execution thanks to a 2-0 win over Toronto and Columbus's loss in Orlando. Remi Garde's team likely needs Columbus to lose again, but it'll head to New England with their playoff hopes alive.

13. Columbus Crew SC

Record: 13-9-11
Week 32 ranking: 11

The Crew aren't making it easy on themselves. A loss in Orlando on Sunday means that Columbus likely still gets into the playoffs with a point against Minnesota next week, but the margin for error has all but disappeared for Gregg Berhalter's team.

14. New York City FC

Record: 15-8-10
Week 32 ranking: 13

It continues to fall apart for NYCFC, which is limping toward the postseason with a single win in its past nine. The humbling 3-0 loss in DC sets NYCFC up for a crucial game against the Union next week with the third seed on the line.

15. Vancouver Whitecaps

Record: 12-8-13
Week 32 ranking: 15

The Whitecaps were officially eliminated from playoff contention with a draw in LA on Sunday, meaning that the offseason of change that Carl Robinson's dismissal promised is now the focus with one game (at Portland) to go.

16. Minnesota United

Record: 11-3-19
Week 32 ranking: 16

Playing in their final game at TCF Bank Stadium ahead of next year's new stadium opening, the Loons fell to the Galaxy 3-1. There's reason for optimism in Minnesota, but it will have to wait until after next week's finale in Columbus.

17. Toronto FC

Record: 9-6-18
Week 32 ranking: 17

On the list of embarrassments suffered by the Reds in 2018, a loss in Montreal with the season dead in the water hardly rates. All that's left for Toronto is to keep Atlanta from beating their season wins record when the host United at BMO next week.

18. Houston Dynamo

Record: 9-8-16
Week 32 ranking: 18

The Dynamo nearly executed a comeback against the Sounders on Sunday, but lost at home 3-2. Next up on the season's final week is a chance to play spoiler against the Galaxy at the StubHub Center.

19. Chicago Fire

Record: 8-7-18
Week 32 ranking: 19

The Fire were again game, with nothing to play for, in a 2-1 loss in Atlanta. One more game to go before the speculation kicks up over the future of several key figures at the club in Bridgeview.

20. New England Revolution

Record: 9-11-13
Week 32 ranking: 20

The Revs suffered a humbling 4-1 defeat to RSL in Utah on Thursday night and will close the season with a home date against Montreal.

21. Orlando City

Record: 8-4-21
Week 32 ranking: 21

The Lions' first win since July 14 came in the penultimate week of the regular season against a playoff contending Crew team at Orlando City Stadium. The surprise victory came thanks to an added time penalty converted by Sacha Kljestan.

22. Colorado Rapids

Record: 7-7-19
Week 32 ranking: 22

It seems fitting that with nothing left to play in 2018, the Rapids played a dour goalless draw against San Jose on Sunday.

23. San Jose Earthquakes

Record: 4-9-20
Week 32 ranking: 23

Chris Wondolowski's chase of Landon Donovan's career goal-scoring will come down to the final week after the forward went without a goal in a draw with Colorado. Next week's final chance to tie and/or break the record this year comes in Seattle next week.
