Memphis Depay: I must become more consistent in order to be the best

Memphis Depay has said he needs more consistency to become the world's best player, telling Canal+ he will not change his approach as he did at former club Manchester United.

Depay came on to score a 90th-minute winner as Lyon beat Marseille 3-2 on Sunday, having done the same thing against runaway leaders Paris Saint-Germain in January.

The 24-year-old has scored 10 league goals for Lyon, who he joined from United last January, this season.

Depay said he felt he could become the world's top player but may have to move on in order to do so.

"Honestly, in terms of quality... nothing [is lacking to be the best in the world]," he said. "I'm not arrogant but I need to be more consistent perhaps.

"No, it's an easy answer. [Alexandre] Lacazette was the best in Lyon, but he had to go to Arsenal to become even better."

Depay spent 18 months at United, but after showing promise in his maiden season under Dutch compatriot Louis van Gaal, things went sour when Jose Mourinho took charge.

He made just one competitive start and four substitute appearances in the first half of the 2016-17 season before tying up his transfer to Lyon.

And he acknowledged that the move to France move had restored his enjoyment of the game.

"I know how it works in football," he said. "I'm the one who gets all the punches. 'Memphis is crazy', 'Memphis does this...'

"I cannot be anyone else but Memphis. I tried that, and I was not happy with myself. Back in Manchester, I was not happy with myself.

"How can I be a great football player when you're not happy with yourself? I looked in the mirror and I was not happy, I was sad. Now I'm happy to be myself."

However, Depay has started only half of Lyon's 10 league games in 2018.

"The coach makes his choices and I don't always know on which critieria, but I have to accept them," he said.

"Even if I start on the bench, if I come on, I go. Because I know I should be on the pitch and I want to show why. If were the coach, I would put myself in, of course!"
