Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson backed Roberto Firmino after his penalty miss meant the Reds settled for a 2-2 draw with Sevilla in their Champions League return on Wednesday night.

The hosts overcame an early deficit at Anfield to go ahead through goals from Firmino and Mohamed Salah, and could have added to the lead only for the Brazilian to strike the post.

And after Sevilla found an equalizer through Joaquin Correa, Henderson refused to blame his teammate's miss, insisting Liverpool had other opportunities to find a third goal.

"Roberto Firmino has scored penalties for us before, players will always miss penalties," the captain told BT Sport.

"We had plenty more chances to score so we need to be more ruthless and go three or four up. That is football and we have got done."

Henderson also said Sevilla's ability to strike on the counter-attack was the difference in the game.

"We could have taken the three points with the chances we created in both halves but they got us on the counter-attack," Henderson said.

"We are disappointed not to take the points but the lads reacted well to the weekend. We looked exciting and could have scored a few more goals.

"We wanted to win the ball back quickly and get the crowd behind us. The lads reacted brilliantly to going behind and there are positives from the game."
