Kaizer Chiefs to play behind closed doors

Kaizer Chiefs will have to play their next two home games behind closed doors, and in KwaZulu-Natal, after being found guilty of failing to control their fans after the Nedbank Cup semifinal loss to Free State Stars on April 21.

Chiefs supporters went on the rampage, physically assaulting security personnel, lighting fires in Durban's Moses Mabhida Stadium, and causing millions of Rands worth of damage to television equipment.

"The Premier Soccer League Disciplinary Committee has found Kaizer Chiefs guilty and ordered that they play three matches behind closed doors, with one [of the three] matches suspended for a period of 24 months provided Kaizer Chiefs is not found guilty of a similar offense," the PSL announcement in a media release on Tuesday.

"The Disciplinary Committee further ruled that the matches which the club play behind closed doors must be scheduled for KwaZulu-Natal.

"The DC held a view that since the incident had occurred in KwaZulu Natal, a strong message must be sent to the spectators in that province that the behaviour of 21 April 2018 is totally unacceptable."

Chiefs' next two scheduled home fixtures are against Durban-based AmaZulu on September 22 and Polokwane City on October 6. Both are in the league.

It is the second time that Chiefs have been found guilty of the same offense this year. The club were fined R250 000 just two days before the incident in Durban on a charge of "spectator misbehaviour resulting from the club's failure to provide adequate security" following violence that erupted after a 3-0 league loss to Chippa United at the FNB Stadium.

The second incident in Durban saw then coach Steve Komphela resign with immediate effect, though the club has continued their poor form into the 2018/19 season with just one win in their eight games to date.
