Michael Hefele latest to sign new Huddersfield contract

German defender Michael Hefele has become the ninth player from Huddersfield's promotion-winning squad to sign a new contract this summer.

The 26-year-old moved to the John Smith's Stadium on a free transfer last summer from the German third tier and made 40 Championship appearances, including three starts in the play-offs as the Terriers secured a place in this season's Premier League.

Although David Wagner has recruited 10 new signings ahead of the step up, the club have also agreed fresh terms with the majority of the squad from last season and Hefele has now followed suit.

His new deal runs until the summer of 2019, with Huddersfield then having an option for a further year's extension.

"Michael was a big player for us last season as we gained promotion to the Premier League," Wagner said.

"I think everyone can see how big of an influence he is in the dressing room and how good of a character he is for the team.

"He is a leader on the pitch and carries responsibility for his teammates, attributes we want our players to have.

"Over the last season he showed how his qualities suit English football and our style of play. Now the test for him and the team is make the step up into the Premier League."
